From correspondents in Africa, 07:30 PM IST

Twenty three people have been killed and many more injured in a football stadium stampede in Omdurman, near Khartoum, the Sudan Tribune reported Monday.

'Crowds trying to get into al-Mureikh football stadium in Omdurman led to the deaths of 23 people,' the newspaper quoted the Sudanese police as saying.

'The majority of them are women and children. Some 36 people were injured,' police said.

The accident took place Sunday during a ceremony for youths who had just finished their basic training and were about to carry out their one-year national service.
