UN Security Council meets on North Korea's nuclear test

From correspondents in New York, United States, 07:30 AM IST

The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting Monday to discuss the new challenge presented by North Korea's testing of a nuclear device.

The 15-nation council met in a closed-door session after the council's five permanent members - the US, Russia, China, Britain and France - along with Japan and South Korea held a separate meeting to consider action against the Pyongyang government.

Diplomats said the council most likely would issue a statement on the event.
