Noted Indian painter Tyeb Mehta died Thursday of a cardiac ailment at a hospital here. He was 84.
The artist succumbed to a heart attack at the Asian Heart Institute hospital, his wife, Sakina Mehta said.
The Padma Bhushan awardee had been ill for the past two years.
At a Christie's auction in June last year one of his works fetched him his highest-ever price of $2 million.
Mehta's canvas 'Kali' fetched Rs.10 million in 2005, and his 'Celebration' went for Rs.15 million in 2002.
He received the Padma Bhushan in 2007.
