At least two people were killed and 18 injured as two inter-city trains collided head-on near the frontier town of Laksham in eastern Bangladesh, media reports said Saturday.

One of the dead passengers was identified as Mohammad Mohiuddin, a 43-year old local farmer, the daily Bangladesh Observer said.

The newspaper quoting railway officials said that the accident happened when the steaming Upukul Express travelling from the capital here crashed into another express train coming from the southern port city of Chittagong .

Senior railway official Ramzan Ali said Friday's crash could be caused by drivers missing signals.

A body of another man remained unidentified until late Friday, sources in the state run railways said.

Local people joined in the rescue operation to remove injured passengers trapped under twisted cars, another prominent daily Ittefaq said.

The newspaper said the latest train mishap occurred close to Bangladesh's eastern Comilla frontier with India.
