IOC not to probe Chinese gymnasts' age

From correspondents in Beijing, China, 03:43 PM IST

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has said that it would not probe the age of Chinese gymnast He Kexin.

The New York Times reported last week that it has found online records revealing that He and her Chinese team mate, Jiang Yuyuan, are fourteen years old and not sixteen, which is the minimum eligibility criteria at the Olympics.

The Chinese officials have denied the reports, saying the sport's governing body FIG has checked their ages before clearing their eligibility.

'The International Olympic Committee relies on the international federations to check the eligibility of the athletes,' IOC president Jacques Rogge told reporters.

'The checks and control are done by the federations and it's not the job of the IOC,' he added.
