Two killed, Olympians hurt in Beijing accident

From correspondents in Beijing, China, 02:02 PM IST

Two people were killed and four others, including two Olympians, injured in a collision between a cargo van and a bus of the Beijing Olympics fleet, an official said here Thursday.

The two slightly injured passengers on the bus were athletes representing Croatia, Beijing Organising Committee spokesman Wang Wei said.

The accident occurred at a crossroad at around 2 p.m. Wednesday when the Olympic bus carrying two Croatian athletes, a Croatian coach, a volunteer and several members of the Canadian and Australian delegations was going from the Olympic Village to canoeing venue Shunyi on the outskirts of Beijing, said Wang.

All six injured were rushed to the hospital, where two succumbed to their injuries later.

'The accident did not affect the athletes' schedule. They went back to training and competition immediately afterwards,' the spokesman said.
