The broader-based Topix index of all first-section issues fell 0.19 points, or 0.02 percent, to 829.03.

On currency markets at 9 a.m., the dollar traded at 88.61-62 yen, down from Tuesday's 5 pm quote of 88.65-66 yen.

The euro traded at $1.4967-68, up from $1.4910-11 late Tuesday, and at 132.61-63 yen, up from 132.18-22 yen.
