US documentarist explores Indian caste system

In India, the caste system exists at the 'subterranean level' of society, and while nobody wants to talk about it everybody believes in it 'at some level or the other', says a US-based documentarist who is in the country to make a film on the caste system.12:32 PM on April 08

The American educationist would be doing a disservice if he went away with the idea that casteism continues in any real sense, or for any reason other than (a)vote bank politics under our own peculiar form of democratic practice, and (b)virulent Christian missionary propaganda who equate freedom of religious expression with that of conversion and division of the great Indian society. When it existed,it had the effect of reserving jobs for caste members and ensuring maximum productivity and job quality.

Casteism derives from tradition, not resting on any religious foundation. The Varna system is the most scientific one, and it is NOT based on birth but on intrinsically individual qualities and inclinations. The castes which may have a tribal origin, even originating from Africa, has been assimilated by putting certain castes under Varnas, by casteist thinkers, but this has no sanction in scripture and therefore in science.

The caste system is so deep rooted that it seems to pass through the DNA to the next generation, somewhat like a hard wored instinct. If India wants to be a great nation, it will have to improve the lives of the 600m downtrodden people, no matter what caste they are from. Built of the prinicples of equality, education and humanity
