Marsh gas to replace cow dung in Tibet

From correspondents in Himachal Pradesh, India, 11:31 AM IST

Tibet will soon bid adieu to cow dung fuel as marsh gas takes over as the new cooking medium.

About 630 Tibetans households have already opted for marsh gas, which consists mostly of methane and is produced in swamps and marshes by the action of bacteria on dead vegetation.

In August, a national conference decided to popularise marsh gas use in Tibet.

The Tibetan authorities allocated over 10 million yuan ($1.25 million) to the construction of rural marsh gas units.
