Successive govts. depended only on some money supply tactics as the main instrument to control prices which was largely ineffective. There has been no effective long term policy for keeping prices under control. A total relook of the thinking, and more importantly, drastic reorganization of the machinery for checking price rises and booking offenders are called for.India has bulk of its popln. in poor or just hand to mouth categories. Retailers and retail chains are allowed to indulge in luxuries of the West like thrusting unwanted goods and fraudulent 'offers' and 'deals'.
