45 cows die after eating 'poisonous' industrial wastes

From correspondents in India, 09:32 PM IST

Forty-five cows have died after eating 'poisonous substances' dumped in an open field by major pharma units in Ghaziabad, police said Saturday.

Circle Officer C.P. Singh told IANS that a First Information Report has been filed on a complaint by local residents of this Uttar Pradesh town, adjacent to the national capital. A probe has been launched.

The cows and their calves were foraging in an open area near National Highway 58 in the Meerut Road Industrial Area, where major pharma companies located there allegedly dumped their chemical wastes.

Reckless ways of waste disposal by pharma and other chemical processing indusries in India are not uncommon. In the light of a large number of cattle being killed by poisnous wastes dumped by the company under report, the matter should be thoroughly investigated without any influences being allowed to hush up, and the culprit companies dealt with sternly with hefty punishments.
