PM chairs meeting on shielding India from global meltdown

From correspondents in Delhi, India, 10:31 PM IST

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday chaired a meeting of an apex group to discuss in detail a package of measures to help India out of the impact of the US recession and the global meltdown.

The group included Commerce Minister Kamal Nath, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia and Reserve Bank of India Governor Duwuri Subbarao.

There were long deliberations between 6 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. on an array of issues and a package of measures will be announced by the weekend to help India overcome the crisis in the world economy, particularly the US recession.

The US is India's largest trade partner and the bulk of foreign investment in India is from that country.
