Haryana to import cattle semen

From correspondents in Punjab, India, 08:07 PM IST

To produce cattle of the desired sex, the animal husbandry and dairying department in Haryana has decided to import cattle semen.

With the implementation of the government's 'Sex Semen Yojana (scheme)', the 'X' and 'Y' chromosomes would be produced which would make it possible to get the cattle of desired sex, state Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary Hardip Kumar said Wednesday.

He told cattle breeders and farmers at Hisar, 300 km from here, this was being done under a veterinary scheme formulated to produce the cattle of a desired sex.

Kumar said that in the first phase of the scheme, the semen would be imported and later on it would be produced within the country. Haryana is known for the high milk-yielding Murrah breed of cattle.
