From correspondents in Uttar Pradesh, India, 04:00 PM IST

Education officers in Uttar Pradesh went on an indefinite strike Thursday to protest against the killing of a district inspector of schools (DIOS) by a teacher in Jaunpur.

K.K. Gupta, an official of the Uttar Pradesh Educational officers' Association (UPEOA), said: 'We will observe the strike till the culprit is arrested and the state government assures adequate security to the education officers.'

Apparently angry at not having received his salary for several months, Anjani Shanker, a teacher at Raj Inter College in Jaunpur, about 250 km from here, shot dead DIOS Dinesh Chandra Pandey Wednesday, police said.

UPEOA has convened a meeting of all the DIOS of the state in Lucknow Friday to decide the future course of their protest.
