Kerala wants Aligarh Muslim University branch

Kerala Education Minister M.A. Baby Wednesday said the government is searching for a site in Malappuram district to establish a branch of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

'The union human resources development ministry has decided to set up five branches of the AMU across the country and one campus will came up in Kerala,' Baby told the state assembly.

'We are are ready to set aside required land and are searching for a suitable site. We want a full fledged campus, including medical, engineering and other professional courses,' he said.

Malappuram legislator M. Ummer, who belongs to the opposition, said: 'We have identified a suitable plot for the AMU branch in Malappuram. It is for the government to see that it is acquired.'

Malappuram district has the largest number of Muslims in the state.
