The Aligarh Muslim University has submitted a plan to the human resource development (HRD) ministry seeking restoration and protection of the varsity's old buildings.

'AMU vice-chancellor P.K. Abdul Azis, who recently met HRD Minister Arjun Singh, submitted the restoration and development plan of varsity's old buildings on the lines of heritage buildings,' Rahat Abrar, an AMU spokesperson, told IANS.

As per the plan submitted to the HRD ministry, the varsity has sought a financial grant of Rs.1 billion for the restoration and preservation exercise, he added.

AMU has several old buildings, including libraries, lecture halls and seminar rooms, which came up way back in 1875 when AMU used to function as a seminary. It was in 1920, that it was raised to the status of university.
