Vice-chancellor takes ill after 'house arrest' by students

The vice-chancellor of Jadavpur University fell ill Thursday after students at the campus put him and other varsity officials under 'house arrest', university official said here Thursday.

'Vice-chancellor P.N. Ghosh has fallen ill after he, pro-vice chancellor Siddhartha Dutta and I were put under 'house arrest' till late Wednesday night by students,' Registrar Rajat Banerjee told reporters.

'We were supposed to have an executive council meeting Wednesday evening over contentious proposals but had to adjourn it as students of arts and science faculty suddenly started demonstration to pressurise us. They wanted written assurances from us in their favour. On refusing to give in, they 'gheraoed' us,' Banerjee added.

According to university sources, the executive council was to decide whether to set up a separate hostel for freshers, and to make it mandatory for students with less than 70 percent attendance to take special permission to sit for semester examinations. The third proposal on the agenda was to advance semesters by a month.
