The Uttar Pradesh government has instituted several awards for teachers of state universities and colleges, for carrying out high quality research work and imparting education of a high standard, officials said Thursday.

'This is for the first time the government has instituted such awards,' the state's higher education director Miya Jaan told IANS.

The move aims to raise academic standards of state universities and colleges, he added.

A sum of Rs.100,000 will be awarded to three teachers for high level research work in science, arts, commerce and literature, officials said.

Three other teachers will be selected from universities and colleges for the best teaching awards of Rs.50,000 each, they added.
