Female teacher dies in Haryana police firing

From correspondents in Punjab, India, 02:02 AM IST

A female teacher died of bullet injuries Sunday during a clash between protesting teachers and police in a Haryana town.

Raj Rani sustained injuries when the clash erupted in Rohtak town of Haryana, around 200 km from here.

The teachers, who work on ad hoc basis, had gathered in Rohtak to press their demand for regularisation of their services and wanted to give a memorandum to Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda at his residence.

'Police fired at us and she (Rani) died in police firing,' said a protesting teacher.

'We were on a peaceful rally and wanted to meet the chief minister. But the police misbehaved with us."

The police denied the allegations.

'Our force did not fire at anybody. We are investigating who fired the bullet,' said a police officer.

Rohtak deputy commissioner of police R.S. Doon and superintendent of police Alok Mittal had asked the agitating teachers to come along with them and submit their memorandum to Hooda, the police officer said.

The police used teargas, water cannons and baton charge to disperse the protesting teachers.
