India is fast emerging as an economic giant which has prompted many to believe that India will become a superpower in the next fifteen years. No matter how exciting this sounds, there are major bones of contention to be picked in this one.3:40 PM on June 26
Rudroneet Ghosh's Indiaenews essay referring to an EIU sample study of executives across the world, incdg.Indians, reads interesting as far as it goes, with highlighting of the study's forecast figures and his own asserions and views. Now, the EIU being an economist/ business periodical is designed around economics, the art of materialism, for its core objectives of the study - whatever they are though econmic trends seem to form a key statistic of study. As rightly sensed by Ghosh, economic indices and quality of life are negatively correlated as it were - US having the highest crime and school dropout (due to straying/corruptive influences?) rates, etc. What Ghosh seems to say is that humankind, if it is to evolve on a genuine path of progress, needs to marry both economics and spirituality, since the latter is the dimension centering around life with a purpose and without injury to others or other offences/crimes, and also a consciousness of an obligation on the part of at least the intellectuals to find solutions (using science and technology no less than spirituality)for the problem of numbers of mouths to be sheltered, clothed and fed; as well as justice. But on 'justice' there are differences bet. intellectuals. Karma is a limiting factor for each individual, and not everything comes out of opportunities for, and efforts by, individuals. If this eternal principle is understood and practised with faith, only then there can be quality of life even to a tolerable level of mankind.
sachin thakur Saturday, November 03, 2007the politics of india is the priblm for india's being a superpower
sachin thakur Saturday, November 03, 2007no mention inia is best in weapons but the crime rate is the main factor
kpbalam Sunday, July 09, 2006This is more a general question: Can a country which is very large and wanting to maintain a very high standard of living compared to others, can do that without being a superpower? Assuming that Superpower = ability to dictate favorable terms.
For example, can any superpower (even just the purely economic one) can be completely self-sufficient? If not, without yielding some power can you acquire resources from 'others'?
Or can social development be possible in India (taking the authors' idea of looking only inwards) taking only internal resources and not depending on external (even in U.S. many want to to do this these days) resources? To some extent, ‘reservation type policy’ is trying to do this by reallocation among social categories of people but surely this is not without any problem even if done well (for example, how can a democracy stop this practice once it starts?).
najeeb Wednesday, July 05, 2006101% agreed with mr.Rudroneel Ghosh.
shiv kanwar singh Thursday, June 29, 2006i agree to this guy's statement, i think he right in saying that india shoudn't aim to a super power & he has given all the reasons for that. My addition to this is that super power comes with super resposibilities. lets suppose india will be super power some day but showing up millitary, weapons, missiles, guns, canons is that the only way to show your matuerity as a superpower?.. i mean why cant we use our superiority by channelising power to most peaceful purposes.why dont we eveluate the country's power by its contribution into peaceful works. india cant afford to create more enemies in the world since india cannot manage one neighbouring enemy...this guy is very much right in saying that we already have a lot of internal problems then to solve external problems. we are yet very much into our developing stage,,we shoudn't even think anything like super power. america keep calling india the next super power but that is coz america have its own deep plans to say that . having so much corrupt people we still keep progressing that shows how vastly talented we are. we are the most unique people in the world & we should always stick to that,,,,of course we cant stop our defence progress being peaceful after all protection of our citizens is also very important but widely we should concentrate on raising standard of living of our citizens.
sanjay Wednesday, June 28, 2006i think this statment that india will never be globle super power is irony on us just look at our politions they so busy in making mony but some time it surprise me because india is one if the fastest growing economy so it indicate us that we have potential to push our country. but before thinking of becoming super power we must have sort out some issue like how increase fii , how to solve infrastrutue problem, and of the important stable politics etc then no one can stop us to be the one super nation
Raideep Mukeherjee Tuesday, June 27, 2006This guy has obviously never been to the United States!
I agree that India shouldn't strive to be a super-power, but your criticism of domestic-America is way-way off-base..
Pooja Tuesday, June 27, 2006I completely agree with "economic development without social development makes no sense at all." People of a nation can only make or burn a country. And the only way to become an example for others is to keep your roots clean & strong. India should first concentrate on making its people determined and strong. Nobody in this world can deny that India is one of the biggest talent creator. But why most of the talented people are appealed to go abroad for better living & opportunities??
The reservation issue, that happened few weeks back is one of the answers. And I absolutely believe, if a person has worked deadly hard throughout his/her life to achieve something, then they deserve to get it... no matter if they get it in-or-outside their country. Why would anybody spoil their talent and life in a place where nobody cares of their worth!!?
