One dead, several injured in Britain train accident

From correspondents in London, England, 10:33 AM IST

At least one person was killed and dozens injured when a train derailed and slid down an embankment in northwest Britain near Cumbria, officials said Saturday.

One passenger died in hospital while eight remained in a critical condition, a hospital spokesperson said. Over 100 others were reportedly injured in the accident Friday evening.

It was unclear what caused the mishap, in which nine carriages fell down the embankment and four turned over, trapping a number of passengers. The train had been travelling from London to Glasgow in Scotland.

There were reportedly 180 people on board the Virgin-operated train, which was travelling at a speed of about 150 kmph. Rescue workers had freed all passengers trapped in the wreckage by Saturday morning, the BBC reported.
