India defeated Ireland by eight wickets in a rain-shortened Group A match of the World Twenty20 at Trent Bridge here Wednesday.

The match was reduced to 18-overs a side after rain delayed the start of play.

Brief scores: Ireland 112/8 in 18 overs (Andrew White 29, Zaheer Khan 4-19, Pragyan Ojha 2-18). India 113/2 in 15.3 overs (Gautam Gambhir 37, Rohit Sharma 52 not out, Regan West 1-23).
