Members of the Federation of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists Societies of India (FOGSI) Tuesday pledged to end discrimination against the girl child to mark Doctor's Day.
FOGSI national president Narendra Malhotra said the alarming sex ratio is a major social problem.
Malhotra said: 'Gender discrimination is deep-rooted in our society and unless we actually implement long-term measures with sincerity towards solving womens' problems, we will not make a headway. Only a social change, education and awareness can solve the problem of gender bias.'
FOGSI has announced it would debar any member proven to be indulging in female foeticide. 'We have initiated a drive to promote adoption of the girl child and already 1,000 members have come forward to adopt girls,' said Malhotra.

Discrimination against girl child is a national shame. Our politicians, bureaucrats, business persons, scientists, medical doctors, spiritual leaders, intellectuals, film personalities and sports persons should be frequently questioned on this life-related issue by their hosts and foreign dignitaries when ever they make visits to overseas countries as our representatives to those august assemblies and international festivities.
