Court asks banks to open accounts for mentally ill kids

From correspondents in Delhi, India, 12:03 AM IST

The Delhi High Court Monday asked the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to formulate guidelines for opening bank accounts for mentally ill children.

Justice S. Ravinder Bhat asked the RBI to publicize the guidelines for the people to know and avail of the facility.

The court was hearing a petition by Sushma Sharma who alleged that the State Bank of India had refused to open the bank account for her mentally ill son Kuldeep.

The court asked the RBI to regulate Multiple Disability Act into Banking Regulation Act and issue the necessary guidelines.

The court also directed the State Bank to open Kuldeep's account in two weeks.
