Many hurt in police cane charge in Agra

From correspondents in Uttar Pradesh, India, 11:01 PM IST

Several people were hurt in the city Tuesday after police cane charged a mob protesting police brutalities and demanding the release of more than 30 people arrested for allegedly torching a police station.

The protesters were demanding release of those arrested on Monday for allegedly burning down a police station at Khairagarh, 30 km from Agra, described as a fallout of Holi hooliganism.

The cane charge infuriated the people more and many have threatened to go on an indefinite hunger strike.

Police sources in Agra say the family members of Nagar Panchayat chairman Anil Garg had allegedly incited the villagers to torch the police station after the police let some people accused in Sunday's violence go free. The rampaging mob set fire to shops, vehicles along with the police station, forcing the police to open fire.

Police sources told IANS late Tuesday evening that the situation was under control.
