The Gujarat government Tuesday announced the appointment of Justice (retired) Akshay H. Mehta as new member of the commission probing the communal violence of 2002.

Justice Mehta replaces Justice K.G. Shah, who expired last month.

The commission headed by Justice G.T. Nanavati is yet to submit its report six years after it was formed in the aftermath of the sectarian strife that claimed at least 1,000 lives.
