From correspondents in Uttar Pradesh, India, 03:30 PM IST

Prohibitory orders have been clamped in Uttar Pradesh's Kanshiram Nagar district after a man was killed and several injured in police firing to disperse a crowd protesting against a decision to dissolve one of the tehsils (sub-districts) of the newly formed district, a police official said Saturday.

'We have imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 (of the criminal procedure code),' Kanshiram Nagar Superintendent of Police Luv Kumar told IANS.

He added that over 10 people have been arrested for their involvement in the violent protests. Kanshiram Nagar is over 300 km from state capital Lucknow.

The police had opened fire Friday to disperse the agitating crowd here. The locals were protesting against the government's decision to dissolve Soron tehsil in the district, police said.

In the protest, several buses were damaged and Soron's telephone exchange was set on fire.
