Policeman surrenders in kidney racket, sent to jail

From correspondents in Delhi, India, 09:01 PM IST

A city court Wednesday remanded a Delhi Police head constable to 14 days judicial custody for allegedly accepting a bribe from an associate of kidney racket kingpin Amit Kumar.

Devendra Kumar surrendered in the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate A.K. Kohar, who gave the ruling.

Amit Kumar was arrested Feb 7 from a hotel near the India-Nepal border and deported to India. He is in the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Delhi Police had slapped a case against seven of its men and arrested one of them - Assistant Sub Inspector Ravinder Kumar - for allegedly accepting bribes to allow the kidney transplant racket to flourish.

The racket served clients from Britain, the US, Greece, Lebanon, Canada, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Amit Kumar is believed to have conducted 600 illegal kidney transplants.

Many nephrologists too are involved in this horrible crime, at least as is known to be the case in Tamilnadu.

The cop is a wretched lowly person, unlike the big fish like the surgeons, nurses, nephrologists,AND govt.officers - the true criminals.Jailing cop is like killing a dog as stones are available but for no good reason.

It will be a big blunder on the part of govt.if they believe that the kidney racket is confined to this or that place in India. It is ubiquitous and if the govt.gets the courage to admit this,it will face an almost impossible challenge to bring to book a whole chain involving doctors, nurses, middlemen, even other nursing homes. Our present day "professionals"area highly atheistic/unethical lot, not the like of the bygone,god-fearing VAIDYAS who would accept what is tendered in gratitude by patients AFTER they are cured.
