Women's panel to probe Haryana rape victim's suicide

The National Commission for Women (NCW) Wednesday condemned the Haryana police for not taking swift action against two policemen accused of raping a woman, who committed suicide when she failed to get justice.

'We condemn the incident and would investigate why action was not taken against the guilty officers. We have taken suo moto notice of the news reports and would be sending our team for investigations,' NCW chairperson Girija Vyas told IANS here.

'Law enforcers cannot be law breakers,' she added.

A woman in Haryana, alleging rape by policemen, committed suicide Monday in the office of a top police official, saying that she was taking the extreme step out of frustration.

A resident of Rohtak, she had come to the office of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) V.B. Singh in Panchkula to lodge a complaint of rape against two police officials.

Haryana police Tuesday dismissed the two accused, who are on the run.
