Gujarat village affected by canal breach back to normal

From correspondents in Gujarat, India, 10:30 PM IST

Work was still on to repair a breach in the main canal of the Narmada dam project even as the situation in Sujatpura village that bore the brunt of the accident Wednesday returned to normal, a Gujarat government official said Saturday.

'We have disbursed Rs.40,000 cash doles and Rs.610,000 as compensation for houses damaged in Sujatpura,' said B.V. Raval, Mehsana district development officer.

'Today (Saturday) we began the survey of fields to assess the damage and it will be completed tomorrow and then we will decide on the compensation on the agriculture front,' Raval said.

He said the water level at Sujatpura, about 130 km from here, had subsided the same day and cleaning operations had begun promptly.

Six medical teams were also deployed and chlorination was completed, he said.
