Emigrants' skill upgradation scheme to be launched

The Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) will launch a skill up-gradation programme for potential emigrants.

This country-wide scheme would bve launched in sectors like construction, engineering, manufacturing, nursing and Information Technology, said a press release issued by the MOIA.

The scheme is being implemented with help from the ministry of micro, small and medium enterprises, the state governments, apex industry associations and non-governmental organisations.

It is part of recent initiatives that include setting up a Overseas Workers Resource Centre, with a toll-free helpline to provide information for Indian workers planning to go abroad, the press release said.

The ministry is establishing the Council for Promotion of Overseas Employment (CPOE), which will serve as a "strategic think-tank".

A welfare fund for emigrants to provide financial support will be established during this financial year.
