Troops on high alert on LoC after exchange of fire

From correspondents in Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir, 08:00 PM IST

The situation remained tense and troops were placed on high alert along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir in the border districts of Rajouri and Poonch Friday, a day after exchange of fire between the two countries.

The Pakistani troops had opened fire allegedly to provide cover to a group of infiltrators in Krishna Ghati sector along the LoC in Poonch district Thursday, military sources said. The gun battle lasted for about 20 minutes.

'However, there were no casualties (on the Indian side),' an army officer told IANS on a condition of anonymity.

The latest incident comes on the heels of a similar infiltration attempt June 19 in the same area.

'The infiltrators retreated as our soldiers were alert and alive to the situation,' the officer said.

The situation has been reviewed by the field commanders of all formations at the LoC and it is feared that the skirmishes were the sign of increasing infiltration in the weeks to come, military sources said.
