Serial murders leave Chennai police foxed

From correspondents in Tamil Nadu, India, 08:32 PM IST

The burnt body of a security guard was discovered in the southwest suburb here Thursday, the third mysterious murder in the city in the past 10 days and the sixth in a month.

The continuous murders with similar modus operandi have triggered fears and rumours about a psychopath killer and left the authorities foxed, official sources told IANS Thursday.

The latest victim, S. Basha, 45, was found charred to death with his head bashed with a stone, the police said.

Failure to identify the apparent motive behind the murder and the victims' poor backgrounds have left the police in a quandary, sources said. Police interrogate over 150 tramps every day, sources added.

Police commissioner R. Sekar, who ruled out possibilities of a psychopath earlier, said: 'All angles are being looked into.'

Several serial murders have been reported in the past but scarcely did the public hear anything on what was done by the police and what results were achieved in terms of culprit being booked, punishments given as justice to the rogues.Of course public memory is short, but that cannot be an excuse for not widely and prominently publishing the info in public interests of safety.
