Two cops suspended for drinking with man under trial

From correspondents in Uttar Pradesh, India, 07:00 PM IST

Two Uttar Pradesh police constables, who were caught sharing a drink with a man under trial in the intensive care unit of a hospital, have been suspended, an official said Thursday.

The incident was reported from the Aligarh government hospital late Wednesday night.

'An undertrial, Dharam Singh, was admitted to the hospital two days ago and three constables were posted Wednesday night to guard him,' Shailesh Tomar, Aligarh police spokesperson, told IANS on phone.

Of the three constables, two were having a drink with Singh around 10 p.m. Another woman in the same ward objected.

'The constables threatened the woman, following which she made a call to the police control room on 100. The circle officer of the city reached the hospital and caught them red-handed,' added Tomar.

A medical test of the two constables, R.P. Singh and Budh Prakash, confirmed that they had been drinking. They were suspended by senior superintendent of police, Aligarh, Asim Arun.

'We have cautioned our force not to indulge in such activities,' said Arun.
