Creche for construction workers' children opened in Delhi

From correspondents in Delhi, India, 08:02 PM IST

A creche for children of construction workers was opened at the Commonwealth Games site, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, here Thursday by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

The Delhi Building and other Construction Workers Welfare Board funded the venture operated by an NGO 'Mobile Creches'.

'The board would facilitate setting up of more and more creches by providing financial assistance. This would ensure developmental rights of young child, with special focus on the migrant child on construction sites,' Dikshit told reporters.

The board has a corpus fund of Rs.1.5 billion, which has been accumulated with a cess on building construction activities in Delhi.

'The new creche would provide day care services to the children and training women to run these facilities. Present creche would benefit 60-70 children in the age group of 0-6 years,' Dikshit added.

Dikshit expressed confidence that creche at Nehru Stadium will set an example for government agencies and builders at all Commonwealth Games sites.
