Tortoises worth Rs.1 mn seized at Chennai airport

Over 950 live tortoises were recovered from the baggage of a Singapore bound passenger late Friday night, customs sources at the airport said.

A protected species in India, the star tortoises are considered a delicacy in China. They are valued at Rs.1 million.

The amphibians were found in the baggage of Abu Baker, 37, who had booking on an Air Lanka flight bound for Singapore via Colombo.

The suspect has been remanded to judicial custody, sources added.

    Hopefully such smuggling is not taking place frequently, and this instance of catching the smuggler is not just one in a hundred successful exits of smugglers with their wares left undetected.
