The Delhi Metro was put on a high alert after two of the five blasts in the capital Saturday evening went off close to its stations but authorities said train services remained unaffected.

"Extra forces have been mobilized. Almost every one is being frisked. But we have not suspended services," a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) spokesman said.

There was five explosions in the capital in the evening and two of them - one in the Central Park, adjacent to the Rajiv Chowk metro station and another near the Barkhamba Road Metro station - took place around 6.30 p.m.

Nearly 800,000 commuters use the Delhi Metro every day.

Meanwhile, as panic gripped the city, several roads were choked with traffic.

There were traffic jams at Connaught Place, Greater Kailash, Nehru Place, ITO, Ring Road, Hauz Khas, Kasturba Gandhi Marg and Parliament Street.

According to Delhi Police officials, all shops at and around the blast sites were asked to down their shutters.
