Indian government asked to justify LTTE ban

From correspondents in Delhi, India, 02:03 PM IST

A special tribunal has asked the central government to justify its renewal of the ban on Sri Lanka's Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

The tribunal, headed by Justice Vikramjit Sen, Monday asked the central government to produce fresh evidence against the LTTE by Friday so as to have the ban on the group extended by another two years.

The ban was first imposed in 1992 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act of 1967, a year after the LTTE was accused of assassinating former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. The ban has been extended after every two years.

LTTE counsel have argued that the group cannot be banned because it does not come within the territorial jurisdiction of the Indian government.

The LTTE has also stated that it does not seek to disrupt the sovereignty and integrity of India.

Religion or language cannot be a factor to decide soverienty. It can only be racial and relevant geographical, racial and geopolitical circumstances. Srilanka has major Tamil groups which share same language as in Tamilnadu. Racially both are Dravidian, Indian, or Aryan, African,... depending on how boisterously you can argue. Buddha is considered as a god in Hinduism as well. Some argue Shaivism is southern Indian religion, even not same as Hinduism, etc but Shiva is worshipped all over India.Again some will argue contrarily. But economic and geographical factors dictate Sinhalese and tamils to live as single nation with give and take between the Tamil (not to be confused with LTTE). It is inhuman that LTTe guerrilla warfare has put thousands of Tamils wailing and miserable, orphaned.

LTTE is merely a cowardly terrorist group wearing the mask of a freedom fighting movement. They do not have any territorial restrictions to carry on their 'war' and get killed by regular armed forces of Sri Lanka. These same people assassinated Rajeev Gandhi and killed along with him a score of innocent people, colluding with politicians who are now powerful and many others in Tamilnadu. Their grievance, whether bogus or genuine, should have been sorted out with the Indian govt.in a formal way. They didnt have the courage which they pretend to show now hobnobbing with Norwegian peace makers.

BM KaruppanI am sure you cannot be a tamil but a human being without any self respect hiding under a tamil name or a person who is bought over. No tamil with self respect will belittle our freedom fighters. By the way we tamils in south India and Eelam are not only united by language but by reiigion also.

The ban is required to invoke law in the event of suspected mischief by LTTE on Indian soil, where we already have Islamist, Maoist Naxalite and other terrorism for us yet to tackle.LTTE's arguments in favour of India's lack of justification for banning it are 'correct' only only so far. Considering the sympathies of many people in India, especially in Tamilnadu (on the basis of ties of common language with the Srilankan Tamils), for this terrorist/freedom fighting organization, India should think twice before lifting the present ban on this violent terrorist setup.

A very good start. Atleast cruel dictators sitting in the South block will get some shock before they ban LTTE on another pretext
