A highway heist of cash and gold worth Rs.37.5 million has been solved with the arrest of 11 people and the recovery of Rs.17 million, the Tamil Nadu police said Tuesday.

According to police officials, robbers disguised as policemen looted a van belonging to a private jewellery firm based in Tiruchirappalli, 300 km south of here, when the vehicle was making its way here in August almost at the halfway point on a highway.

On the basis of a hunch that it was an inside job, police zeroed in on an employee of the firm, S. Shanmughamani, whose attempted flight clinched the issue leading to his arrest and the apprehension of his accomplices with a part of the loot, police added.
