Inflation data release deferred to Friday

From correspondents in Delhi, India, 10:00 PM IST

Data on India's annual rate of inflation for the week ending Sep 20 will be released Friday due to the national holiday Thursday, said a commerce and industry ministry official Wednesday.

'As Thursday is a national holiday on account of the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the weekly inflation data will be released Friday,' said the official, who did not wish to be identified.

The holy Muslim festival of Eid-ul-Fitr also falls on Thursday.

Every Thursday, the commerce and industry ministry releases the wholesale price index (WPI) on a weekly basis to ascertain the rate of inflation.

India's annual rate of inflation was pegged at 12.14 percent for the week ended Sep 13.

The final data for WPI for the week ended July 19 showed that the inflation rate was actually 12.54 percent, as against 11.98 percent based on provisional statistics.
