From correspondents in West Bengal, India, 01:01 PM IST

At least six people died after a speeding car fell in a canal in West Bengal's Burdwan district, police said Tuesday.

The incident took place at Jamalpur in Burdwan district when a Tata Sumo carrying 10 puja revellers fell into a canal late Monday night.

'Six bodies, including those of three women, have been recovered so far and the rest are still missing. The search operation is on,' officer-in-charge of Jamalpur police station Joyjit Lodh told IANS.

He said the car was returning after visiting puja pandals during the ongoing Durga Puja festival.

'The bodies were recovered in the early hours of Tuesday with the help of local residents,' Lodh said.
