A 35-year-old woman hanged herself to death in a West Bengal village after being allegedly humiliated by neighbours for being pregnant despite having grandchildren, police said Friday.
The incident took place at Amai village in West Bengal's Dakshin Dinajpur district, about 400 km from here.
'Chobi Kayal, 35, hanged herself to death at her Amai residence Thursday late night. She was five months pregnant,' a senior police officer at Banshibari police station said.
He said Kayal has two married daughters. The elder daughter Sona has a one-year-old daughter.
'Kayal's husband Niranjan told us that when their neighbours, especially the women, learnt about her pregnancy, they started humiliating her. They even accused her and called her shameless and characterless.'
'Continuous humiliation made Kayal feel guilty about her pregnancy. She stopped stepping out of her house and stopped talking to every one, including her husband,' the officer said.
Based on Niranjan's statement, some neighbours have been detained for interrogation, he added.
Niranjan went to Kolkata Wednesday and on his return early Friday, he found Kayal hanging from the ceiling of her bedroom.

If people suffer in such cases, at all, neighbors or others do not think it is their duty to be of positive help.If so,such neighbours must be punished by suitable law.
We have made laws governing relationships within family which are controversial. It is more important to enact laws to prevent irresponsible talk/ behaviour of neighbours, relatives and others when someone in society still, for no fault of theirs, has to carry on with old socioreligious practices like early marriage which can result in one getting members of posterity (children, grandchildren) earlier than what we normally observe in society. Irresponsible social behaviour in such rare instances, resulting in tragedy, are impermissible.
