First witness in Mumbai terrorism trial to depose Monday

From correspondents in Maharashtra, India, 07:00 PM IST

The trial in the Mumbai terrorist attack will gain momentum Monday when the first witness is expected to give evidence against Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab.

The first witness is expected to tell the Special Court about the events of Nov 26 night at Girgaum Chowpatty when Kasab was overpowered and arrested by police and Abu Ismail, the leader of the 10-member terrorist squad, was shot dead.

Appearing before Additional Sessions Judge M.L. Tahliyani Thursday, Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam presented 83 documents, which the court would rely upon for examining the witnesses.

In a related development, Kasab's lawyer Abbas Kazmi moved the court seeking permission to visit the places the 10 terrorists from Pakistan attacked - like the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Cama and Albless Hospital near Metro Cinema, Girgaum Chowpatty, the Taj Palace and Tower Hotel, the Oberoi-Trident Hotel, and Nariman House.

Kazmi also wanted to check Kuber, the fishing trawler the 10 terrorists used during the second half of their journey from Karachi to Mumbai.

The court was yet to pass an order on this.
