People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has been named India's largest animal rights group by the Limca Book of Records.

'To be recognised by the Limca Book of Records is a great honour. Animal rights is a movement whose time has come, and the support and recognition that PETA India has garnered shows that people are ready to make this a kinder world for all beings,' PETA India's Chief Functionary Anuradha Sawhney said in a statement.

PETA has been quite vociferous in creating better living conditions for animals through creative advertisements with well known faces and grassroot campaign programmes.

The group helped in rescuing 39 animals kept in a pathetic state at the National Institute of Virology, Pune, and also prohibited bullocks from pulling oil tankers in Mumbai.
