A Delhi Police officer of the VIP security wing died and four constables got injured when the SUV he was driving rammed into a tree near Ashoka hotel in the capital, an official said Wednesday.

Assistant sub-inspector Shiv Kumar Meena, 36, was on his way to VIP security office at Vinay Marg Tuesday night when the incident took place.

Meena, originally from Rajasthan, lost control over the wheel and hit a tree when he tried to save a dog crossing the road, the official said.

While Meena died on the spot, the injured constables suffered minor injuries and were discharged from hospital after initial treatment.
