Stalin to head Chennai River Water Authority

From correspondents in Tamil Nadu, India, 10:04 PM IST

Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has been named to head the Chennai River Water Authority (CRWA) set up to clean the city's two major rivers Cooum and Adyar, an official statement said Thursday.

The setting up of CRWA comes after Stalin's recent visit to Singapore to study the manner in which that country cleaned up its river.

Other members of the CRWA will be the ministers in-charge of slum clearance, environment, tourism, chief secretary and officials of the above ministries.

Earlier Thursday, Stalin briefed Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on his Singapore trip.

He also explained the steps that have to be taken to clean up the 65-km Cooum river which has a 18-km stretch within the city limits.
