States on high alert on eve of Babri demolition anniversary

From correspondents in Delhi, India, 08:04 PM IST

The home ministry Friday asked all states to remain on high alert on the eve of the anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition and deploy security forces in sensitive places.

'It is possible that some misdirected elements may wish to disturb communal peace and harmony. Hence, all state governments have been advised to remain on high alert. Security forces will be deployed for maintaining law and order in sensitive places,' the home ministry said here in a press statement.

The ministry said it appeals to all sections of the people to maintain communal peace and harmony ahead of the Babri razing anniversary on Dec 6.

'The year 2009 has been remarkably free of any communal conflict. All religious festivals were celebrated peacefully. It sincerely hopes that all sections of the people will heed this appeal and cooperate with the central government and the state governments to maintain communal peace and harmony,' the statement added.

The Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, was demolished Dec 6, 1992, by Hindu right-wing groups, triggering communal clashes in the country.
