Huge fire engulfs Sharjah port

A huge fire broke out in a major port in Sharjah in the early hours of Saturday, causing damages running into billions of dollars.

The fire broke out at Port Khalid around 2 a.m. Saturday in a garbage bin at the Emirates Oil Refiner depot in the port, according to reports.

It quickly spread across and two oil reservoirs and barrels of other oil products were also engulfed in the flames. No report of any casualty has been received.

Though official statements were not available, local media reports put the loss caused by the fire at around eight billion dirhams ($2.18 billion).

Firefighters were engaged in controlling the fire till Saturday afternoon even as huge plumes of smoke could be seen from a distance.
