Five Indians were killed and six injured in a road mishap that occurred in the mountains of northern Oman.

The brakes of the Toyota Landcruiser they were travelling in reportedly failed in the mountains of Jabal Al Akhdar Friday and the driver lost control of the vehicle, the Times of Oman reported.

As the driver tried to avoid colliding with vehicles from the opposite direction, the Landcruiser hit a cement barricade before rolling over and falling down a 20-foot ravine killing five occupants and injuring six others, including two children.

'The vehicle was just reaching the last turn before the checkpoint when the accident took place. The vehicle fell over and was damaged on all sides,' the report quoted an eyewitness as saying.

The dead have been identified as Sreenivas Narayanan, Vijay K. Subramanyan, Sukanya Amarnath, Jayalakshmi Radhakrishnan and Priya Ramesh - all of them hailed from the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Arrangements were being made to send the bodies home.

Those injured are being treated at the Nizwa Referral Hospital in Al-Dakhaliya.
