Diaspora meet may have to wait to break even

From correspondents in Tamil Nadu, India, 10:02 PM IST

The overseas Indian affairs ministry may have to wait some years before seeing surplus from its prestigious annual event, Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD).

According to a ministry official, the event costs around Rs.60 million (Rs.6 crore or $1,235,000) to host.

While income from delegate fees and rentals of stalls at exhibitions accounts for Rs.35 million (Rs.3.5 crore), there is still a shortfall of Rs.25 million (Rs.2.5 crore), the official said.

Out of about 1,500 delegates at the three-day event that began here Thursday, some 300 are invitees while the rest have paid the fee of Rs.10,000.

A purely commercial view of the diaspora event involving surpluses and shortfalls, looks misplaced, shortsighted. The Ministry shd. understand that the intangible benefits (sense of solidarity, imponderable support in causes in international arena, acting in some direct/indirect manner supplementing our diplomacy and collaboration scouting efforts, for ex.)should be kept in perspectice in any imaginative conceptual approach to this event.
